The film’s narrative, set in a dusty settlement on the Danube riverbank, follows the misadventures of Matko, a small-time schemer, and his cunning son Zare. However, Zare is in love with the beautiful Ida, setting off a carnival of betrayals, escapes, and reconciliations. This plot, however, is merely a clothesline upon which Kusturica hangs his true subject: the post-communist condition. The old socialist order is gone, replaced not by stability but by a raw, predatory capitalism personified by Dadan.
